## Overview

- **Who it's for**: Hobbyists, students, and developers prototyping small side projects or demos who needed to deploy an app without paying for hosting.
- **What you get**: A free tier of Heroku's platform-as-a-service offering up to 1,000 free dyno hours per month, shared across an account's free apps. It included a free Postgres database (up to 10,000 rows) and a free Redis instance at similarly limited scale. Free dynos had no custom domain SSL and were not suited for production workloads.
- **How it works**: Free web dynos went to sleep after 30 minutes without incoming traffic and woke up on the next request, introducing a delay for the first visitor. This tier was discontinued in November 2022 when Heroku eliminated its free product plans entirely.
