## Overview

- **Who it's for**: Desktop users, especially heavy Facebook and Twitter users, who wanted their social feeds and messaging surfaced directly inside their web browser rather than in separate tabs.
- **What you get**: RockMelt was a Chromium-based browser with dedicated sidebars showing live Facebook friends and chat and a Twitter/RSS feed, plus "Edges" for one-click sharing of pages to social networks. It launched as an invite-only beta in 2010 with backing from Marc Andreessen. In 2012 the company dropped the standalone browser and relaunched RockMelt as a mobile news-reading and content-discovery app for iOS and Android.
- **How it works**: Users browsed the web as normal in the Chromium-based window while friend updates, chats, and a Twitter/RSS stream ran in fixed side panels, and shared pages via the Edge bar. RockMelt was acquired by Yahoo in August 2013, after which the app and browser were shut down and the team moved to work on Yahoo News Digest.
