Who it's for

Individuals and families who wanted automatic, unlimited backup of their personal computers without paying per gigabyte, including budget-conscious users willing to back up to a friend's or family member's computer instead of (or alongside) the cloud.

What you get

CrashPlan for Home provided unlimited cloud backup storage for one price per computer, with continuous, versioned backup that kept deleted files and old versions indefinitely. It also supported free peer-to-peer backup to a friend's or family member's computer and backup to local or attached external drives, all through the same CrashPlan app with 448-bit encryption. Restores were available via the desktop app or a web browser from any internet-connected device.

How it works

Users installed the CrashPlan desktop app, chose which folders to back up and where to send the backup (Code42's cloud, a friend's computer, or a local/external drive), and the app then ran continuous backups in the background. Files could later be restored through the same app or via CrashPlan's website. Code42 announced the end of CrashPlan for Home in August 2017 and fully shut it down in October 2018.
