Alternatives to Dark Sky

Dark Sky was aimed at everyday smartphone users, especially iOS owners, who wanted precise short-term rain and snow alerts for their exact location rather than generic city-wide forecasts.

The app provided hyperlocal, minute-by-minute precipitation forecasts (e.g., "rain starting in 8 minutes") along with hourly and 7-day outlooks, push notifications before precipitation began or ended, and clean, data-dense visualizations of weather trends. Developers could also access the same forecasting data through the Dark Sky API, which many third-party weather apps relied on. It was known for a polished, minimalist interface and unusually accurate short-range predictions using radar data.

Users opened the app or a connected service, which used their device location to pull radar and sensor data and generate a hyperlocal forecast; the app then sent proactive alerts as precipitation approached or changed. Apple acquired Dark Sky in 2020, discontinued the iOS app and website, and shut down the API by March 2023, folding its forecasting technology into Apple Weather and WeatherKit.
