Developers who wanted a single lightweight, distributed editor spanning multiple languages and remote/local workflows, with optional IntelliJ-grade code intelligence when needed. As of December 22, 2025, JetBrains discontinued Fleet and stopped distributing it, redirecting the underlying technology toward a new agentic-development product (Air).
A fast-starting, minimal-UI editor that could run in a lightweight text-editing mode or switch to a 'Smart Mode' backed by IntelliJ's code-analysis engine for refactoring, navigation, and language-specific tooling. It used a distributed client-server architecture, letting the editor run locally while a backend (local or remote) handled indexing and builds. It also supported real-time multiplayer collaboration for co-editing and pair programming. Already-installed copies keep working, but server-dependent features like AI Assistant may degrade over time, and no further updates will be released.
Fleet ran as a thin client connected to a workspace backend (local machine, remote server, or container); opening a project let you toggle between plain editing and Smart Mode for deeper code intelligence, with collaborators able to join the same workspace for shared editing sessions.
