Developer chat, migrated to Matrix. Gitter has been discontinued; the active alternatives listed here are maintained products you can switch to.
Open-source maintainers and contributors, and developer communities who want a public chat room tied to a specific GitHub/GitLab project or organization.
Gitter provides persistent, searchable group chat rooms scoped to repos, orgs, or topics, with Markdown and code-snippet formatting suited to technical discussion. Sign-in is via GitHub, GitLab, or Twitter accounts. Since being acquired by Element, Gitter runs on the Matrix protocol, so rooms are bridged into the Matrix network and can be joined from Element or any other Matrix client, not just gitter.im.
Users sign in with a GitHub/GitLab account and join or create a room associated with a repo or community; conversation happens in that room via the Gitter web app or any Matrix client connected to the gitter.im homeserver.
