Who it's for

Smartphone users who wanted a mobile messaging app with built-in AI assistance and machine-learning-driven reply suggestions, similar in audience to WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger users.

What you get

Allo combined one-on-one and group text messaging with the Google Assistant, which could be invoked directly inside a conversation to answer questions or make plans. Smart Reply suggested short responses based on the conversation and could recognize the content of photos to suggest relevant replies. Users could resize text via a Whisper-Shout feature to convey emphasis, add stickers, and doodle on photos before sending. An Incognito Mode offered end-to-end encrypted chats with expiring messages and discreet notifications.

How it works

Users signed in with a phone number, added contacts, and messaged them through standard or Incognito chat threads, typing @google within a conversation to summon the Assistant or tapping Smart Reply suggestions to respond quickly. Google shut down Allo in March 2019, folding its features into other messaging products.
