Smartphone users who wanted to identify real-world objects, landmarks, artwork, books, or printed text by pointing their camera at them, rather than typing a text search query.
An image-recognition search app that matched a photo against Google's databases to return relevant information and web results. It could recognize landmarks, book and DVD covers, artwork, logos, storefronts, and wine labels, and could also read text (via OCR) to trigger actions like a translation or contact lookup. Results linked out to standard Google search listings for the identified item.
Users opened the Goggles app, snapped or framed a photo of an object with their phone camera, and the app analyzed the image and returned matching search results. The app was discontinued around 2014 as its visual-search capabilities were folded into Google Lens.
