Who it's for

Google One subscribers (originally 2TB+ plans, later extended to most paid tiers) on Android, iOS, Windows, or macOS who wanted extra privacy on public or unsecured Wi-Fi.

What you get

A VPN that encrypted device network traffic and masked the user's IP address, aiming to shield browsing from ISPs and network snoops without a separate app subscription. It was bundled into the Google One app/subscription at no extra cost. Google discontinued VPN by Google One for subscribers in 2024, and the feature is no longer available as part of Google One plans (a separate 'VPN by Google' still exists preinstalled on some Pixel phones).

How it works

Users toggled the VPN on from the Google One app on a supported device, which routed traffic through Google's VPN servers to encrypt it and hide the device's IP address; it ran in the background with no server selection or configuration required.
