HipChat was aimed at software teams and companies wanting persistent group chat rooms alongside their development tools, particularly organizations already using Atlassian products like JIRA and Bitbucket.
HipChat provided persistent chat rooms, one-to-one messaging, and video/voice calls with screen sharing. It included file and image sharing with inline previews, searchable message history, and integrations with development tools such as JIRA, Bitbucket, and other Atlassian and third-party services via webhooks and a REST API. Desktop, web, and mobile clients were available.
Users created or joined topic- or project-based chat rooms, could send direct messages, and connected integrations that posted automated notifications (e.g., build results or code commits) into rooms. Atlassian discontinued HipChat in 2019, selling its intellectual property to Slack and directing customers to migrate to Stride (short-lived) or Slack.
