Songza was a free, ad-supported streaming service built around human-curated playlists organized by activity, mood, genre, and time of day, rather than an algorithm. Its signature 'Concierge' feature asked users what they were doing (e.g., working out, cooking dinner, going to sleep) and served up a handful of playlists to match. Playlists were assembled and refreshed by in-house editors and outside music experts. It did not emphasize on-demand search for individual tracks the way traditional streaming services did.
Users opened the Songza app or website, told the Concierge what they were doing or picked a mood/genre/activity, and selected one of the suggested playlists to start listening. Google acquired Songza in July 2014, folded its Concierge feature into Google Play Music, and shut Songza down on January 31, 2016.
