Client-side (zero-knowledge) encryption meant files were encrypted on the user's device before upload, so not even Wuala could read them. The service offered file sync across devices, automatic backup, file versioning, and encrypted link sharing. It originally let users trade local disk space and bandwidth for storage in a peer-to-peer network, though this was later dropped in favor of storage on Wuala's own servers in Switzerland, France, and Germany. Desktop clients were available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, plus mobile apps for iOS and Android.
Users installed a desktop client or app, which encrypted files locally before syncing them to Wuala's servers; changes propagated automatically across linked devices. Files or folders could be shared with others via encrypted links, and previous versions could be restored through the built-in versioning system. Wuala shut down in 2015.
