Who it's for

IE users (and, before 2011, Firefox users) who wanted quicker access to Google search and related tools right from their browser's toolbar.

What you get

A search box built into the browser chrome for querying Google without visiting google.com first, plus bundled utilities like a popup blocker, form AutoFill, a spell checker, and a PageRank indicator showing a page's Google ranking. Later versions added custom buttons, bookmarking, and translation shortcuts. It was a free add-on, not a standalone application.

How it works

Users installed it as a browser plugin/add-on, after which it embedded a persistent toolbar in Internet Explorer (or Firefox) where they typed search terms or clicked its buttons to trigger Google features. Firefox support ended in 2011, and the toolbar was eventually discontinued and is no longer offered by Google.
