#7 of 12 in Cloud PaaS

Porter ranks #7 of 12 in Cloud PaaS, with an Alt Score of 86. It is available on Web, macOS, Linux and Windows. 10 of 10 checklist rows are verified against a public source.

Porter runs a managed Kubernetes control plane inside the customer's own cloud account, giving Heroku-style git-push deploys, autoscaling, managed add-ons, and infrastructure customization once teams outgrow simpler PaaS tools. It targets teams that want BYOC without operating Kubernetes directly.

Who it's for

Porter is aimed at engineering teams that want a Heroku-like deployment experience but need their application infrastructure to run inside their own AWS, GCP, or Azure account rather than a shared multi-tenant cloud, typically startups scaling past a basic PaaS or migrating off Heroku.

What you get

Porter provisions and manages a Kubernetes cluster (EKS, GKE, or AKS) in the customer's cloud account, and layers on application deployment, autoscaling, managed Postgres/Redis datastores (AWS only), cron/job services, GitHub-PR preview environments, private networking controls, and a CLI for CI/CD.

How it works

A customer connects cloud credentials via IAM role assumption (AWS), a service principal (Azure), or Workload Identity Federation (GCP); Porter then provisions a cluster with default networking, load balancers, and node groups. Applications are deployed by pointing Porter at a GitHub repository or container registry, either through the dashboard or a porter.yaml file applied with the Porter CLI, and Porter creates a GitHub Actions workflow that redeploys automatically on each push.
