Who it's for

People who take a lot of notes and want to organize personal or professional knowledge long-term - writers, researchers, developers, and students building a personal wiki or 'second brain' rather than jotting quick reminders.

What you get

Notes are stored as plain Markdown files on your own device, so they stay readable and portable without a proprietary format or forced cloud dependency. You can link notes to each other and view those connections visually in the graph view, surfacing relationships that a flat folder structure would hide. A large community plugin and theme ecosystem lets you extend the core editor with features like task management, spaced repetition, or canvas boards. Optional paid add-ons provide end-to-end encrypted sync across devices and one-click publishing of notes as a website.

How it works

You write notes in Markdown inside a local folder called a vault, using [[double brackets]] to link one note to another. Obsidian indexes those links automatically, so you can browse backlinks on any note or explore the whole vault as a graph, then install plugins to add capabilities beyond the default editor.

Where Obsidian stands out

Verified capabilities most alternatives don't have.

Plugins / extensions only 4 of 21 apps
Markdown support only 8 of 22 apps
Local-first storage only 10 of 22 apps
