Anyone who needed to shrink long URLs for sharing — developers embedding links in apps, marketers running campaigns, and everyday users posting links on social media or in emails.
A goo.gl link that redirected to the original long URL, generated instantly via the website, browser extension, or API. Each shortened link came with a built-in analytics dashboard showing click counts, referrers, browser, and geographic data over time. Google offered both an interactive web interface and a REST API for programmatic link creation. It required no account for basic use, though signing in unlocked link history and management.
A user pasted a long URL into the goo.gl tool (or called the API), and the service returned a short goo.gl/xxxxxx link plus a matching QR code and analytics page. Visiting the short link redirected browsers to the original destination while logging the click. Google stopped creating new goo.gl links in 2019 and shut the service down entirely in August 2025, after which existing links stopped redirecting.
